4 Horsemen Racing Glossary Of Terms:
MRA
  • Motorcycle Roadracing Association
  • Colorado's club-level racing organization - find out more at MRA-Racing.org
  • The MRA is sanctioned by the AMA (American Motorcycle Association)
    Novice
  • Newer racer
  • Identifiable by black numbers on a yellow background
  • Can only race in a limited number of classes (Novice & Amateur, Sportsman & Endurance)
    Expert
  • Experienced racer
  • Identifiable by black numbers on a white background
  • Can race in any class that their bike qualifies for, except Novice classes - for complete details, please refer to the MRA rulebook
    Race Types Sprint Race
  • A relatively short race, consisting of 7-10 laps (depending on track length), usually taking 10-15 minutes to complete
  • Most races in the MRA are Sprint races, with the exception of Heat races, Endurance races, & Race of the Rockies
    Heat Race
  • Only run when there are too many racers signed up for a specific class
  • A short 3 lap race - the top finishers qualify to compete in the class they signed up for
  • Racers that do not qualify are allowed to compete in the Sportsman class
  • If required, heat races are the first races of the day
    Endurance Race
  • A 30-minute timed race ridden by 1 rider.
  • These races are broken down into 4 different categories based on engine size:
  • Lightweight
  • -small 4-cylinder and small-to-mid sized 2 cylinder 1
  • Middleweight
  • -Engine displacement up to 640 cc for a 4-cylinder (or up to 750 cc for a 2-cylinder) 1
  • Heavyweight
  • -Engine displacement up to 750 cc for a 4-cylinder (or up to 1000 cc for a 2-cylinder) 1
  • Open
  • -Engine displacement is not limited
  • Endurance races take place on Saturday afternoon.
    Race of the Rockies
  • The MRA's premiere class, running twice as many laps as a Sprint race.
  • aka "ROR"
  • Split into 2 categories based on engine size:
  • GTU -
  • Engine displacement up to 640 cc for a 4-cylinder (or up to 750 cc for a 2-cylinder) 1
  • GTO -
  • Engine displacement must be larger than those eligible for ROR GTU
  • Winner of ROR GTO championship is considered the #1 plate holder for the following season.
    Sportsman class
  • This class is intended to be an essentially non-competetive environment where racers can hone their skills until they are ready to move up to other classes.
  • This class is open to both Expert & Novice racers.
  • Brand new Novices are usually seen running this race.
  • It is not typically run by experts unless they are coming back from an injury or they failed to qualify (heat race) for another class.
  • There are no engine displacement limitations.
    Classes Race classes are typically broken down by one of more combinations of:
  • Engine Size/Configuration Classifications:
  • Lightweight
  • -small 4-cylinder and small-to-mid sized 2 cylinder 1

  • -Engine displacement up to 600 cc for a 4-cylinder (or up to 750 cc for a 2-cylinder) 1
  • Heavyweight
  • -Engine displacement up to 750 cc for a 4-cylinder (or up to 1000 cc for a 2-cylinder) 1
  • Open
  • -Engine displacement is not limited
  • Super Twins
  • -2 cylinder motorcycles only
  • Allowable Modifications Classifications:
  • Supersport
  • -The engine must be mostly stock, with only a limited number of modifications allowed to the bike. 1
  • Superbike
  • -The bike can be modified with very few limitations. When combined with Middleweight (eg: "Middleweight Superbike"), allowable engine displacement is increased to 640 cc. 1
  • GTU
  • -Essentially a combination of Middleweight ("U" stands for "Under", as in under 650 cc for a 4-cylinder) and Superbike. 1
  • GTO
  • -Essentially a combination of Open and Superbike. 1
